Our DIY ideas are getting popular! This one was submitted by Roxanne Wickware (Roxycakes) who likes to provide her brides and grooms with this easy-as-pie preservation DIY for their wedding cake – follow it to have your cake and enjoy it too at your first anniversary.
You Need:
1. A tin (with lid) that will easily fit the top tier or a decent slice of your cake (a bakery box will do as an alternate)
2. Three large sealable and food-safe bags, such as Ziplock (don’t use cling wrap)
3. A printed copy of the following instructions to tape on the outside of the container for easy reference the day of the wedding and when you’re ready to thaw the cake.
Instructions:
Storing
1. Label the box and have it placed under the cake table the day of the wedding
2. Ask a member of the bridal party to box up the cake immediately following the cutting ceremony
3. When ready, place the cake into one of the plastic bags. Carefully smooth the air out of the bag and seal the bag. Place the sealed bag into the second bag, smooth the air from this bag and seal: repeat, using the last bag. Place the cake inside the tin (if using a bakery box, wrap the box with a layer of tin foil)
4. Store the cake in your freezer
Thawing
5. A day before you want to eat it, remove the can from the freezer and place the can directly into the refrigerator overnight. This step is important – opening the can or removing the foil will create condensation and may harm your cake. Give the cake 24 hours to thaw in the refrigerator before removing any layers.
6. Remove from refrigerator and allow to sit at room temperature for two hours before serving. Enjoy!
The layers of plastic and tin, and thawing the cake properly, are the keys to successfully preserving your cake. By taking these simple steps the day of your wedding, you’ll be able to preserve your cake for months after your wedding day.
