Soma Chocolatemaker

Soma's Heartnut Truffles
Soma was the substance that sent characters into a blissful state in Brave New World and author George Orwell was likely making a slyly ironic reference by using the Sanskrit word that translates into: food of the gods – a term which, in Latin, also translates to the scientific name for cacao and its chocolate derivatives. For chocolate lovers, it’s an easy connection, and the better the chocolate, the more blissful the state.
Soma Chocolatemaker was created to take chocolate-making back to its roots by using only the finest, and when possible, the fairest traded and organic ingredients and vintage equipment. The equipment, according to the artisanal company’s rep. Cynthia Leung, is harder to control but was integral to the company’s purpose because it allowed their chocolate-makers to pay homage to each unique cocoa bean’s individuality. Turns out, beans from different parts of the world have highly distinctive flavours {just like your other favourite vices coffee and wine!} and Soma’s goal is to play on their ability to create custom bliss for each and every mélange of tastebuds that walk through their door.

A Wedding Favour
When it comes to creating wedding favours, that customization can be adapted to everything from packaging to shape – they’ve been known to use moulds clients have found and brought in and they can imprint a custom design onto their larger chocolate bars if you give them enough time – to flavour. For one wedding, the team created favours of their Canadiana truffle, a cone shaped chocolate made with olive oil and Douglas fir for a distinctly patriotic flavour.
From chocolate tasting events to giant gift baskets to individual truffle favours, there isn’t much Soma won’t do for a wedding … although they haven’t catered an entire meal yet as far as The Wedding Co. knows and as chocolate lovers ourselves we think that would be a pretty blissful experience!
