30-Day Bride-Brace Yourself For The Unexpected

The 30-Day Bride is Karina Lemke, a Toronto-based florist, wedding planner and TV host who decided on May 13 to tie the knot on July 1. For 30 consecutive days we’re tracking Karina and her fiancé, Mark Breslin (of Yuk Yuk’s fame), as they reveal their trials and tribulations. We’ll have all the juicy details leading up to, and including, their big day.

Karina’s aunt — the much-loved matriarch of her family — passed away unexpectedly on Saturday. The following day Karina and her mother hopped on a plane to Scotland to attend her funeral.

In the midst of planning a wedding — a whirlwind of dreamy destinations and gorgeous gowns — comes an unanticipated death. It’s a harsh reminder of reality: we can plan and organize and obsess all we want but at the end of the day we need to brace ourselves for the unexpected.

Take, for instance, the record-breaking Toronto blackout on August 14, 2003 that left the city — and many brides, for that matter — powerless. It began at around 4:00 p.m., just hours before one friend was slated to get married. She went ahead with the ceremony but pushed the reception back three days, in which time she planned a whole new wedding. It was a sweeping success and one that, countless weddings later, still stands out in our minds.

In weddings, as in life, there’s only so much we can control. Karina’s aunts spirit will no doubt imbue Karina when she moves on to the next stage of planning.
