30-Day Bride-Is Back

The 30-Day Bride is Karina Lemke, a Toronto-based florist, wedding planner and TV host who decided on May 13 to tie the knot on July 1. For 30 consecutive days we’re tracking Karina and her fiancé, Mark Breslin (of Yuk Yuk’s fame), as they reveal their trials and tribulations. We’ll have all the juicy details leading up to, and including, their big day.
With just eight days left until the big day, Karina and Mark are finally in sunny California. It’s a relief for Karina, who until now has been making some pretty major decisions about her wedding via phone and email. And if there’s one thing she has learned in the process, it’s that nothing beats a face-to-face encounter.

Surf and Sand Resort
Karina has been making up for lost ‘face’ time since the moment she hopped off the airplane. There was the meeting with Rabbi Barry, who’ll be officiating the wedding and with whom, you’ll recall, Karina got off to a rocky start. The get-together with her Cali friends (ex-Torontonians), who kindly offered to store Karina’s wedding dress (“I had major panic pangs as soon as it was out of my site!” she admits). And, of course, the appointment with Sandy at the Surf and Sand Resort, where Karina and Mark will be tying the knot. All this in just a few short days!
But things are looking good. The food, for the most part, is delicious. And Karina is now considering having the ceremony on the top-tier space of the hotel versus the smaller room initially assigned to the couple (“This was not even close to an option through email and phone,” Karina points out). Of course, it comes at a price — they’d have to book eight hotel rooms for the night and two super-luxe suites if they want the bigger space, which more than doubles the cost of an hour-long ceremony!
Another big decision needs to be made in the coming days as well — where to throw the rehearsal dinner. Karina and Mark have sourced two possible locations, each special in its own way. Casa Mia is situated atop a cliff with spectacular views, it serves Mexican food and has a great overall feel. But the downside is that Karina and Mark aren’t guaranteed space on the patio for 20 people unless they show up by 5:30 (and, even then, they’d be chancing it). The second option, Wahoo, is a local and authentic “hole in the wall,” as Karina lovingly calls it, with the best tacos in town. And they’ll even reserve the patio! But Karina thinks it may be a bit too casual.
So, lots of decisions to be made, but thankfully they’re there in person to check things out first-hand. Still left on Karina’s to-do list? Cake, hair and makeup — three essentials, as any bride can attest. Stay tuned for all the deets.
