The Cat’s Meow

Yesterday I did an illegal u-turn on Avenue Road when I spotted this dress out of the corner of my eye.

If you are at all considering buying a vintage wedding dress make sure you stop by The Cat’s Meow on Avenue Road just north of Bloor.  This 1950’s hand-beaded Gene Shelly is a great example of some of the exquisite one-of-a-kind pieces they currently have.

LOL Candy Has Arrived!

When I received a phone call from Debra Novack, the woman behind LOL Candy, to come and sample her gourmet candy, it felt as if I had won the lottery. In fact, I had been waiting for a long for someone to launch a company in Toronto that specializes in bulk gourmet candy, and Novack has hit the nail on the head with her smart new venture. Because, let me tell you, it has been a challenge trying to create interesting sweet tables with the limited amount of choices available at bulk-food stores.

Brides and wedding planners often face two major issues when selecting candy for their events: lack of freshness (who knows for how long some of those sweets have been lying around?) and colour (trying to find exact shades to match the overall wedding theme). Debra has solved these problems. For starters, none of her candy is kept in stock except for samples, which means that your candy will always be fresh since she specially orders it for each individual occasion (just be sure to call in advance). Second, Debra will match your colour theme with an array of options, from M&Ms (yes, the colours are separated) to gummy bears to licorice

Debra will be at The Wedding Show sampling all of LOL Candy’s colours and flavours. Make sure you visit her booth for a sweet treat!

A Wedding At The Montreal Science Centre

There are so many aspects of this wedding that I love. From the contemporary look to the abstract photography, this is one on my favourite weddings of the year.

Debbie Woo, the bride, contacted The Wedding Co. in August to tell us she was making 1000 cranes for her September 25th wedding and that she would like to donate them on behalf of herself and her now husband, Fady Mansour, to the Crane Chandelier Project. Needless to say, we were thrilled.

Debbie took on this challenge because she likes what the cranes represent: loyalty, peace and dedication — all qualities need for a successful marriage. Plus, she loved making cranes as a little girl, and so she decided that this would constitute the DIY portion of her and Fady’s wedding.

But when Debbie hit 300, she was ready to stop because of the huge time commitment involved. Both she and Fady have demanding careers in the medical field (she’s a surgeon, he’s a gynecologist and obstetrician). With some help from Fady’s mother, and with the knowledge that the cranes would ultimately find a good home in our crane chandelier, Debbie persevered. In the end, she made 1800 — enough to use in the ceremony canopy as well as the photo booth. An impressive feat indeed!
