Last February 14, I promised myself that on my next birthday, I was going to truly celebrate me. So this past Valentine’s Day (yes, my birthday falls on Valentine’s Day), I set out to buy myself a celebration ring. I knew of many places to go to look for one but I also know that the shopping experience is just as important as the purchase. So after treating myself to a pedicure, I walked over to Anne Sportun Jewellery, a lovely boutique in my Queen West neighbourhood.
Anne Sportun is usually closed on Mondays but since it was Valentine’s Day, the shop was open and Anne was actually manning the store. I had met Anne before and on this particular day, I told her I celebrating my birthday, my marriage of 14 years, my two kids and my business (The Wedding Co. turned 10 this year) — and that I was looking for a celebration ring. She eloquently placed a slew of ring on a velvet mat, giving each option equal respect regardless of price. I tried on many rings as Anne sat patiently, answering my questions and letting me discover her beautiful designs at my own pace.
I ended up buying a beautiful ring that I cannot wait to pick up (they did not have my size) but I have to tell you that the experience of buying from Anne was just as valuable as the ring itself. I was inspired by her grace and passion, and I know that when I wear my ring will always remember the experience. And the next time I allow myself to celebrate, I will be looking for a similar experience — not just an object.
Your wedding day will always be remembered as a day of celebration. But don’t forget all of those equally important mini celebrations leading up to the big day — and the many more that are yet to come.
