Mimosa Flower Studio

I first met Jennifer Elliotson of Mimosa Flower Studio a few years ago at the Vintage Hotels Wedding Show. I could see right away that she has a gift for flowers and, since then, I’ve been wanting to reach out to Jennifer to find out more about her.

When I called in January to ask if she was working on any weddings in the coming weeks — that’s the best way to watch florists work their magic — she politely told me that her studio is closed during the winter months. I was a bit shocked but also intrigued to find out why. So when she suggested I come and visit her in late February — that’s when she works on her display for the 2011 Vintage Hotels Wedding Show — I jumped at the opportunity.

I set out on a snowy day for the trek to Jennifer’s Niagara-based home and studio. Her friendly husband, Mark, was outside shoveling a path to the studio. Inside, I found Jennifer all cozy and surrounded by beautiful yellow flowers (including Mimosa, the inspiration for her company name).

Jennifer has an amazing sense of colour and design; her hand-tied bouquets and table arrangements are beautiful sculptures just waiting to be admired. So why does she shut down her flower studio during the winter months? It’s simple: Flowers are only one form of expression for Jennifer. She uses the winter season to express herself through other mediums including sewing, painting and pottery.

When May comes around, Jennifer is excited to get back to the studio, filling it with fresh spring flowers and new ideas and inspirations she has collected through the winter months. It is unfortunate that winter brides won’t have an opportunity to use Mimosa Flowers but, for those getting married between May and November, you’re in luck.

Thank-you to Nataschia Wielink for documenting the day.
