Juli Daoust and John Baker are the co-owners of Mjök — a lifestyle store located in Toronto’s Junction neighbourhood that carries designs mostly from young Scandinavian artists. On January 23, their love for Scandinavia (and the store itself) became the inspiration and backdrop for their wedding and reception.

Juli and John began their day in the Canadiana Room at the Gladstone Hotel, an ideal location for their northern-inspired wedding with its birch bark wallpaper and antler chandelier. Phogorapher Danijela Pruginic took a few shots of the couple before heading to the store where 22 of their closest family and friends waited for the celebration to begin.

The décor was simple yet stunning, from the gorgeous flowers placed in mason jars to the name cards, which where made from wooden blocks used daily in their store. And, in keeping with the Scandinavian theme, each guest received a white Dala horse — a symbol of the Dalecarlia province in central Sweden.

I asked Juli and John to share their favourite aspect of the wedding and here is what they had to say: “The whole evening was intimate, so it’s hard to pick just one thing. The ceremony was quite beautiful, and the food by Ezra Title was easily a hit with everyone. The band also contributed to the overall mood. We think the best thing, though, was having such a select group of people, which made it really easy for us to enjoy the whole night.”

The Gift Of Song

Happy Hoilidays!

Just six months before he was set to get married in October 2010, David Gill decided to plan a wedding theme unbeknownst to his future bride, Julie Norden. It was a bold move but, then again, the couple had already been together for ten years, and so David was fairly confident that Julie would love with his big surprise.

The theme? You Are What You Love, the title of a song by one of their favorite Canadian artists, Melanie Doane. With help and advice from their wedding planner, Angela Zaltsman of A to Z Event Management, David had the marquee at the Eglinton Grand — the location of their wedding ceremony and reception — read “You Are What You Love, Starring Julie and David.” He also had a custom movie poster made with the same theme, and had the title projected on the wall above the head table.

Finally, David contacted Melanie Doane’s agent to see if she could perform during the cocktail hour. Melanie said she’d be honoured, and she was especially touched when she saw the poster and marquee (the singer happens to live in Toronto, though David would have been willing to fly her in from just about anywhere). I asked David what some of the logistics were and he said the hardest part was hiding the rented equipment from Julie.

On the big day, Julie was in total disbelief. “No, you didn’t!” were the first words out of her mouth when she realized it wasn’t a CD playing as they entered the cocktail reception, but rather Melanie herself.

What did this mean to David? It was the perfect verse to a beautiful song he and Julie are writing together.
