We met one evening at the Dakota Tavern. We were both there to see the Beauties, the resident indie rock band. The atmosphere of the venue, the mood of the music, the closeness of the people — that was the energy we wanted for our wedding.
We chose the Eglinton Grand because we love its art deco aesthetic. We didn’t want our wedding to feel theme-y so we added touches that made it personal but not over-the-top. We served gin gimlets, assembled baskets containing handmade perfumes, vintage mirrors and hair brushes for the ladies washroom, and placed black-and-white photos of our parents’ weddings throughout the venue. To top the night off, Julia changed into a vintage flapper dress.
We see bands every week, and often have friends over to listen to old and new vinyl, so our wedding was lit up by music. The gypsy jazz band Michael J and the Red Rhythm played the cocktail hour and throughout dinner. And naturally, we asked the Beauties to play. They had the whole wedding party on the dance floor, and they even learned the Hora, a traditional Jewish song, just for the occasion. Story by: Trish Snyder
