2014 Wedding Cake Trends

We asked the very talented duo, Allyson Bobbitt and Sarah Bell, co-owners of Toronto’s sweetest destination, Bobbette and Belle, to tell us what they think are the wedding cake trends for 2014, here is their prediction.

Trend #1: Hand Painted Cakes

This will be a popular option because each cake is so unique. There is a premium placed on this type of work because not all cake decorators have a painting background. Realistic hand painted cakes are few and far between. In addition, this style works well when trying to mimic the vintage china and printed fabrics that are often included in other areas of the wedding decor.

Trend #2: English Garden
Hand made sugar flowers have long been a staple in the wedding cake industry, but as wedding decor moves toward a more naturalistic, rustic approach, sugar flowers are being reinvented. Instead of traditional flowers like roses we create sugar flowers that are meant to look like they are growing in a garden. Varieties include traditional flowers like roses, but we also make flowers such as anemones, ranunculus, tree peonies, moth orchids and sweet peas. The approach is elegant yet modern.

Trend #3: Sweet Tables  (sweet table below by Megan Wappel Designs)
Sweet tables have been very popular for a few years now, but there are some interesting trends within sweet table design that we have noticed recently. Some brides are opting to forgo a traditional wedding cake and order a selection of traditional bakery style cakes to enhance the sweet table. Rather than having every item on the table match one colour pallet, designers are opting to mix traditional cakes and pastries with a few more decorative elements. This ensures that the sweet table looks amazing but there are also plenty of classics to be enjoyed.

Trend #4: Colours
The current trend in wedding colours is towards soft blush pinks, greys and champagne. These are traditional colours but they are being modernized when paired with a variety of metallics. Our Sequin cake has a blush pink background fondant with hand painted gold “sequins”. The look has the softness of a pastel but the sophistication of the gold. Metals tend to pick up the light and really draw guests eyes to the wedding cake.
