A Hindu Wedding In Jamaica

For those who can’t travel south for March Break, here’s a little taste of the sun.

Toronto couple Shaweta Sharma and Sundeep Gosain wanted to host a destination wedding for 40 of their closest family and friends. Here’s the catch: It was a destination Hindu wedding, which is chalk full of detailed traditions.

Foreseeing that there would be many tricky logistics, Shaweta and Sundeep sought the help of destination wedding planner Jennifer Borgh. The couple wanted to give its guests a unique experience incorporating a traditional Hindu wedding ceremony with a Caribbean vacation.

With Jennifer’s help, Shaweta and Sundeep chose Jamaica as their destination. In the end, the wedding came together quite easily, given that there’s a strong community of Indo-Jamaicans in the country — especially in the city of Kingston. Here Jennifer sourced a priest and Henna artist, and she even managed to track down a white horse for the groom to ride as he approached the ceremony.

Travelling With Your Photographer

I have a strong suggestion for anyone planning a destination wedding: hire a wedding photographer from the city you live in. It’s worth the cost of flying him or her to your venue because trusting and building a relationship with your photographer pre-event is key — and it’ll definitely show when it comes to the final product.

The team at 5ive15teen photo company here in Toronto has shot over a dozen destination weddings, from Italy to the Bahamas. I recently connected with co-owner Michael Caringi to get his take on the topic. Here’s what he had to say.

Can you give me three reasons why a couple should hire a photographer from the city they live in rather than hiring locally?

1. You need to meet face to face with your wedding photographer to build a relationship with him or her. This is much easier to do that if you hire a professional from your own city.

2. There is quite a bit of post-production after the wedding, including designing and ordering albums and prints. It’s much easier if you live in the same city.

3. You can book an engagement shoot before the wedding in your everyday surroundings and take that time to get to know your photographer.

What are the benefits to hiring an experienced destination photographer as apposed to a photographer who has never travelled before?

Someone who has shot a lot of destination jobs know exactly what needs to be done and when. Chances are they’ve already experienced a few of the hiccups that could happen while travelling, especially in remote locations, and they’ll have solutions to work through them.

What is it about photographing a destination wedding that you enjoy?

Everything is inspiring! Whether the wedding is on a beach, in a garden in England, or a Villa in Tuscany, it’s nice to get out of the city and let your surroundings inspire you. The overall feel of a destination wedding is more relaxed. They are also more intimate, which gives the photographer an opportunity to get to know the couple and their guests on a more personal level. If the people you’re shooting know you and are comfortable with you being around, that will be reflected in the images.
