Monique Lhuillier at William Ashley

Last Wednesday, brides-to-be and industry leaders gathered to meet renowned fashion designer Monique Lhuillier and find out her thoughts on modern-day registry.

William Ashley set the stage. While sipping Rotkappchen sparking wine and enjoying champagne-flavoured cupcakes from Cake Opera Co., guests gazed at the beautiful Lhuillier gowns provided by White Toronto as models floated through the store.

Surrounded by stunning floral bouquets by Lilium, The Wedding Co.’s Catherine Lash interviewed Monique about her new collection for Waterford and asked her thoughts on how couples should embrace the registry process.

Monique encouraged couples to register for a variety of items, from formal dining wear to unique stand-alone pieces, and told them to utilize the experts at William Ashley for guidance. She recommended they choose the patterns that fit with their lifestyle, and not to worry about mixing formal with casual.

But the most important piece of advice was, do not be afraid to use and love your new gifts. Whether you are enjoying a quiet breakfast together on a Sunday morning, or are entertaining a large group, make every moment together special.

Thank-you to Rebecca Wood Photography for capturing this very special evening.

Wedding Registry for The Bedroom

Last week we featured an article on the importance of educating yourselves on what you are registering for. Take stock of what you have, consult the experts and make wise choices.

Today we’re broaching a topic we wish more couples talked about before marriage: buying linens. So we asked for a few insider tips from Julie Brown, assistant creative director at Au Lit Fine Linens in Toronto. Here’s her recipe for a dream bed:

1. Bigger isn’t necessarily better. We’re talking about thread count, of course. If you copped a feel of Au Lit’s thread count bar at the Wedding Co. Show [link] last month, you may have loved the 1,000–thread count cotton satin sheets while your sweetie preferred 600–thread-count percale (Brown swears by 220 cotton percale). Bed sheets are personal: Ignore the numbers and let your fingers decide.

2. Go long and strong. Now we’re talking about cotton fibres, silly! 100 per cent pure Egyptian cotton is best because of the strength and length of its fibres. That’s why a 220–thread count sheet using Egyptian cotton woven in Italy can feel softer — and last longer — than a 500 thread count from inferior cotton.

3. Choose crisp or silky. Bed linens come in two weaves. Percale has a crisscross weave and a thread count higher than 200, which gives it a crisp, dense feel. Cotton satin’s finer threads and weave give it a silky feel and sheen.

Newlywed or not, you’ll spend a third of your life in bed. Consider registering for quality sheets the same way you do for china.
