Diner En Blanc

After reading an article in The New York Times about a Paris event called Dîner en Blanc, Janice Thompson decided to organize a similar event in Niagara-on-the-Lake, where she works as Chamber of Commerce president. For those who don’t know, Dîner en Blanc is an annual dinner that invites thousands of participants to dress up in white and meet in a public space with their own food, drink, tableware and chairs. It always turns into a giant party, with people eating and dancing well into the night.

Thompson knew this would be the perfect type of event for her community. She was so excited about the idea that she and her staff organized their own version in just three short weeks.

Here’s how it worked: There were 50 tables of eight. Each table had a captain that organized its own guest list. Guests paid $10 each to cover the cost of the table and chair rental. Then each table organized its own food and décor, as well as ordering wine in advance from Wineries of Niagara-on-the-Lake. Guests also supplied their own linens, plates, glasses and cutlery (nothing disposable was allowed). And, finally, everyone came dressed in white.

Guest had an amazing night mingling, eating and toasting the beauty of friendship until the clock struck 10:30. That’s when everyone worked together to clean up the street and make sure not a crumb was left for even a mouse.

I feature this story to remind everyone that you don’t always need an occasion to host a party. Celebrating good friends, food and community is occasion enough.
