Everyone wishes for beautiful weather on their wedding day but sometimes it is even more beautiful then we can ever imagine. Ali and Mike had the most incredible sunset at their destination wedding in PEI last summer, a gift that doesn’t require a thank-you note.

This week we also featured Sabrina and Massimo’s wedding. Mother Nature gave them rain all day and their day was just as beautiful.

Planning a wedding for this couple was not a difficult process, knowing the best suppliers, including Blanc Events, and understanding the amount of time and energy it takes is a definite advantage.

The one element that they couldn’t control (I have yet to met a planner who can) was the weather. Mother Nature decided to shower Sabrina and Massimo all day with her gentle drops.

Lucky Sabrina and Massimo hired photographer George Mavitzis who took a rainy day and made beautiful images of this lovely couple (love the one in front of the Dior window).

Ali and Mike live in Toronto, they decided to get married at Ali’s family cottage in PEI where she spent her summers, and she and Mike vacation often.

When Ali’s dad got wind of the plan, he immediately went over to their neighbour, Jim, to find out if an invitation to the wedding / lobster cookout, would be enough to borrow his front lawn to pitch the wedding tent. From the photos below, I would have to assume, Jim was happy with the deal.

The neighbour on the other side was, Rodney, of the famed Rodney’s Oyster House here in Toronto. He also did not to disappoint by supplying the bride with fresh oysters while getting ready, and jovial and witty stories about the world of oysters.

Ultimately, Ali and Mike’s goal was to host a lobster dinner for their 25 guests that made the trek to the island to celebrate with them. With a lot of help from family and friends, and Mother Nature, who provided the beautiful Island sunset, their day was exactly what they envisioned.

I had the opportunity to ask Michelle what had been the hardest decision so far in the planning process, and her answer was not surprising, but that fact that she and Mark haven’t resolved it yet might be a little concerning. I will let Michelle explain: (please don’t do this for your wedding)

“I thought it might be tough to find a venue, or perhaps pick a dress, but it’s now very clear the hardest part of this whole crazy planning process is deciding on the guest list.

We made a silly mistake booking the venue without actually counting how many people we’d be inviting. When we tallied all our guests and their ‘plus ones’, we were way off! Turns out I have a bigger family than I thought. For instance, my one grandmother made a list of people she’d like to invite and there were 70 people on it; my other grandma’s list had 67 people on it.

So, I came up with a rule to help make cuts: “if they don’t know my fiancé’s name after having been with him for eight years, they can’t come”. I thought it was genius, however my very involved mother fully disagrees. She views the wedding as an opportunity to reconnect with long lost loved ones (she had 550 guests at hers!?)

Ultimately, we’re going to have to make some tough decisions … but not yet! I’m content putting this task off for as long as possible.”

Queen Victoria writes about her wedding day in her journal.

February 10, 1840

Slept well & breakfasted at 1⁄2p. 9, before which Mama came, bringing me a nosegay of orange flowers, & good Lehzen gave me a dear little ring. Wrote my Journal & saw Lord Melbourne. Had my hair dressed & the wreath of orange flowers put on my head. My wreath & veil were worn, according to the rough sketch. Saw my precious Albert alone, for the last time as my Bridegroom, & he fetched in Uncle & Ernest for a moment. At 1⁄2p. 12 I set off, dearest Albert having gone before, & Mama & the Duchess of Sutherland went with me in the carriage. I wore a white satin dress, with a deep flounce of Honiton lace, an imitation of an old design. My jewels were my Turkish diamond necklace & earrings & dear Albert’s beautiful sapphire brooch. I never saw such crowds as there were in the Park, & they cheered most enthusiastically.

At many weddings the cake gets forgotten or just ends up on the sweet table. The reason I like this photo is that it shows people actually ate the cake. As tradition has it, all those who eat a piece of wedding cake will have good luck. So don’t forget to serve your cake to all your guests!

Marla and Adam’s most memorable moments started when they realized during the ceremony they forgot the ring. As Marla’s sister ran to retrieve it in the bridal suite, Adam turned to their guests and requested them to “talk amongst themselves”.

Next, Adam surprised everyone, including wedding planner Angela Zaltsman, and photographer Scarlet O’Neill, when he got up and sang to Marla in front of their 300 guests.

Last but not least, the couple decided to forgo the fancy hotel for their wedding night and went home. Unbeknownst to them their friends had sneaked in and “romanticized” the house.

As Marla and Adam have proven, the most memorable moments are usually the most unexpected.

The couple wanted so badly just to be married they thought they would have their ceremony at City Hall but decided to have a more, “wedding-like”, celebration and booked the Toronto Wedding Chapel. 

After the ceremony they had a fun, casual, photo session with photographer Jeffrey Chan and then it was off to the nearby Pickle Barrel restaurant for dinner, good conversation, and of course, wedding cake.
