The Old Don Jail

April 27, 2009

donjail41
It takes a very special couple to envision their wedding day at a jail. That The Don Jail is an historical monument with some spectacular architectural details and a little interesting history makes it generally more appealing, but still it takes a certain personality to say: Please join us for dinner, dancing and a tour of some untouched 19th century prison cells.

But that’s exactly what Don Jail Events Inc. a subsidiary of Slingshot Inc., is banking on. For this summer, and this summer only, Toronto’s Don Jail, built in 1864 will be open for events before it is renovated to become part of the Bridgepoint Hospital.

The scale of the Atrium

Not much has been done to the space since it closed three decades ago, the original wallpaper is still peeling from the Governor’s Quarters, the place probably hasn’t seen a paint brush since the ‘60s and the prison cells have only been touched to remove the locks – apparently to keep the secret of the lock design. But aside from the dust and the threat of a dungeon, the Atrium’s intricate dragon brackets and soaring ceiling make for a pretty spectacular spot for an event.

The space, on a sunny day in mid-April, felt innocuous and rather pleasant, as old well-constructed buildings are apt to feel. One major stumbling block we all agreed upon was that (for now at least) the only available entrance is through the back rather than via the grand front doors. There was no question that a swanky event could be pulled together in the large space, which was reserved for public punishments and meetings with lawyers. I can only imagine how beautiful it would be to fill the two balconies that completely circle the room with friends to watch over a wedding ceremony in the centre of the floor. I just might not want to be the last one out of the building afterwards!

The Governor's Quarters

The Governor's Quarters

Prices: from $3,500 to $5,500 depending on the day of week, the rental includes the space, water and electricity supply.

Numbers: Up to 350 can be accommodated throughout the entire building.

Location: 550 Gerrard Street East (Gerrard and Broadview)

Facilities: Beyond the Atrium, there are many rooms available for use – one has even been temporarily designated a ceremony room – they are spread over both the first and second stories and include the original Governor’s Quarters.

Portable toilet facilities are already available as will (fingers crossed) set lighting, furniture and sound packages.

Suppliers: A list of preferred caterers and other suppliers will be available soon – they will all be equipped and prepared for the specific nature of the event space.

Feel: “Gritty and authentic,” says Chris from Don Jail Events Inc.

What sets it apart: The fact that it is only available for such a limited time, along with the fact that not many jails become event spaces.

Great spot for a portrait: A cell? On a balcony in the Atrium? Against any of the peeling, unkempt walls? The uniqueness of this spot makes for many signature photos through the night.

Hi Tracey,
Thanks so much for the kinds words, I will be announcing new venue tours in the next week – you can look forward to something larger than life at the CNE grounds, a tiny spot, tucked away in Yorkville, and something creatively en pointe!
