Designers Who LOVE Ribbon: Savoir Flare

November 13, 2009
While Cachelle is seeing more ribbon in appliques, belts and hair peices, this Lela Rose dress stood out as a special exception because the ribbon was used to create a luxurious texture and lovely soft shape.

While Cachelle prefers ribbon used as appliques, belts and hair pieces, this Lela Rose 'ribbon' dress drew her attention because the ribbon creates a luxurious texture and lovely soft shape.

Despite tying the knot this summer herself, Cachelle Odette Fry (Savoir Flare), has not ended a long time love affair; she admitted unsheepishly last week that she dreams of piles of creamy ribbon in all the colours of the rainbow and would roll around in it, if she could.

I contacted the event designer about her favourite subject with regards to current fashion and her tricks of the trade last week, and we covered just about everything:

Cachelle always buys two rolls of high quality ribbon in the colours her clients have chosen for their event: one double-faced half wide and one single-faced. They are her secret weapon against the mundane, the undecorated or the downright ugly spots that scream for a little attention. From spots in the WC to hanging lanterns to creating last minute sashes or brightening up vases, there are endless spots where ribbon is a last minute decorating ’savoir’.

An event designer’s best calling card is her own appearance but functional party clothes, especially shoes, can be hard to come by and neutral heals are a key standby. To dress up her old reliables Cachelle accessorizes them with ribbon she’s glued to clip-on earring backings from Micheal’s. From a structured, preppy navy roll of ribbon to a  ruby rosette, there’s no end in what she can create to put the final polish on her own look.

...and the finished product

The easiest DIY, suggests Cachelle, involves updating an old look. By folding a necklace over a loop of ribbon tied off with a bow, Cachelle has saved pieces from her closet of outdated costume jewellery and dropped them smack into the current season. Different ribbons will suit different events and different pieces of jewellery, this is a super way to ‘tie’ in colour to a wedding and create a little something extra (and re-wearable) for your bridesmaids.
