This week we’re obsessing over buttons as a decorative element. We love the creative, homespun feel they inspire in us when we see them arranged in colour-coded piles, or when one or two are used to add an extra splash of originality. And with so many designs, materials, sizes and colours, buttons are sure to complement any decorative style minimally or to the maximum.
Looking ahead, and taking the theme of ‘buttons as fasteners’, this week we’ll bring you a gorgeous alternative bouquet, a cute-as-a-button wedding and a host of buttons at work, alongside brooches, pins and other button cousins that also fasten on a practical level but add, equally, a decorative element when used in just the right spots!

Good Morning (er, afternoon) — it was a slow start today after The Wedding Show closed last night but we’re hugely motivated to bring our readers some spectacular eye candy this week, not only as we give away the beautiful items you may have seen at The Handmade Stand at The Wedding Show, but also our grand raffle prize of a trip to wine country courtesy of Vineland Estates and Executive Travel.
We’ll also be bringing you a wedding a day from a super colourful Indian/Chinese fete to a destination Whistler party. The first is up later this aft.
The first step to planning a wonderful wedding day is to relax and remember the reason for the wedding is that you are getting married, in other words, you are not getting married to have a wedding.
When it comes to planning, get yourself organized and take it slowly, use all the January bridal shows, wedding magazines and blogs a source of inspiration at first, don’t let them overwhelm you. Look for inspiration in other places too, weddings are about celebrating your personalities and your style — consider what inspires you on a daily basis from a style of architecture, to your favourite artist to the first meal you and your partner shared — inspiration for the design of a wedding can come from anywhere.
When you are ready to do some serious research and zero in on trusted resources, ask your friends which shows, blogs or magazines they found had the most useful and practical information. Select a couple and stick with them.
Most importantly relax, enjoy being engaged and the wedding planning process, and take it slowly!
The holiday season is still the most popular time to get engaged, surrounded by family and friends or alone on a romantic vacation for two, that age old question is asked again and again and again. The result? Thousands of couples entering the new year with wedding plans on their minds, and, on average six to eight months to get the job done.
It might not be an engagement ring, but we love this super creative cake by Konstadin who has taken the Tiffany box to a whole new, edible level.
This week, The Daily News focuses on some of the biggest initial planning concerns a couple faces. How to announce an impending wedding or send save the date cards, how to hire a wedding professional, why get engagement photos taken and some of the best tools for keeping plans on course.
For many couples, this can be the most important social event to organize ever, regardless of budget or size and it can get overwhelming, start your planning off on the right foot with a day dream and keep reminding yourself to enjoy the experienc
Good-bye 2009, hello 2010! This is our final wrap-up post and it’s a few of my favourite stories and articles from the past year, starting with this gorgeous photo from Ann Wood’s very creative world of enchanting animals.
Some of my other favourite posts are our tour of Gabriella’s in New York, our coverage of the 30-Day Bride, the gorgeous pipe cleaner girls we found on Etsy and our discovery of marshmallows, an unexpected sweet we’re particularly fond of and hint, hint, it’s part of our trends for 2010!
Our lovely intern, Stephanie Sturino, joined us this past summer as she completed her Event Management program at Seneca, these are her favourite posts from the past year:
There are three Stephanie’s now at The Wedding Co., more on number three tomorrow, but today is dedicated to Stephanie Gareri’s favourite posts from 2009. Stephanie began by managing our Crane Chandelier project but has become fully ensconced at The Wedding Co. as our sales representative, these are the posts she liked the most:
It’s the great Daily News round up. We’ve been blogging for a little under a year and we’re so excited to be entering 2010 — we have tons of great ideas and themes we think you’ll love but before we leave 2009, we thought we’d take a look back and re-visit some of our favourite posts.
First up, Catherine’s picks, enjoy the video theme!
There’s nothing like a good side by side comparison, so from today until the end of next week, we hope you’ll enjoy two completely different theme weeks we’ve created to play off each other. From the sleek, swank cocktail hour of Art Deco glamour, to the warm, homespun delight of a handmade celebration, we’re hoping our content will encourage your holiday spirit and ignite your imagination.
This week, we’ll bring you a bride and groom who gave a nod to Art Deco design and fashion at their wedding a few weeks ago, we’ll show you our favourite Etsy finds within the realm of the flapper and talk shop with one of Toronto’s longest standing hair salons where 1920s-inspired hair never goes out of style. We’ll also talk fashion, music and most importantly, jewellery for the Deco-inspired fete.
Today we’re starting off by celebrating Hanukkah with an Art Deco-inspired ketubah from Octavine Illustration. We particularly love Art Deco design and fashion for its ability to so easily mix and match with modern design, remaining forever relevant and current. A custom Art Deco-styled ketubah, for example, will blend beautifully with an entirely modern dress, venue or style of wedding and it will also remain relevant and current for generations. The other great thing is that one beautifully designed Art Deco element might be easy to incorporate into any event design, but it will always make a splashy statement of opulence and luxury.
