The Spring Wedding Show

March 9, 2010

We are so excited to be presenting a new format of show this spring in conjunction with Toronto’s super fab Drake Hotel on May 1.

The Spring Wedding Show is literally going to be a crossroads between couture and indie style: everything you’ve come to expect from a Wedding Co. event (think super amazing quality of people and products, the city’s best when it comes to weddings and a fun, relaxed, elegant event) but this time we’re blending it with our current obsession with ‘the independent spirit’ of design and the DIY inspiration for modern wedding creativity.

If you attended The Wedding Show and enjoyed the Handmade Stand, or you love our DIY projects on the blog, this is definitely the show for you.

Get a spot in the or (letterpress) workshops we’ve planned by calling The Wedding Co.: 416.597.0143, in the meantime, check our events page for a few more details.

What makes a wedding indie?

February 1, 2010

It was a question we asked a LOT at Indie Wed this weekend and we received a bunch of wonderful descriptions and ideas in reply: from couples who aren’t afraid of incorporating a little colour to their day, to events and people being contemporary and artsy, to fostering new ideas in order to make a wedding something personal and not being afraid to embrace the independent spirit and express oneself.

My personal favourite, came from Jolene Sullivan at Delicate Creature, an event services firm: indie couples, she explained, appreciate the artisanal culture of the independent business owner and “care for the hand behind the wedding.”

Aesthetically, indie weddings can take any form and can go from black tie to jeans and t’s but some really broad themes do seem to be popular at the moment with couples pushing beyond the boundaries of a strictly traditional event and a handmade or DIY feel often permeates: nature, for example is a current favourite, especially with city couples. Sullivan’s booth was themed Spring in Chicago and featured butterflies, moss, birch bark placemats and small vases of petite single bloom flowers.

It was a theme we saw reflected in The Wedding Show as well; Graydon Hall used a neutral colour scheme, butterflies, natural wood elements and served gourmet hot chocolate while Cake Opera Co. used a lighthearted theme of Milk and Honey to incorporate the soft look of milk glass, bees and honeycomb … it’s absolutely amazing to consider that these three very different companies can all draw from a similar inspiration point and achieve something so unique in which to express their professional identity.

The Handmade Stand Winners

January 28, 2010

Scroll through the Handmade Stand items one last time to see the winners and, because we challenged readers to enter by submitting a comment about something wedding-related, we thought we’d post those, too!

Congratulations to all the winners — we’ll be in touch very shortly!

The "Yes" fused glass pendant necklace, Leila Cools -- Julie: "Wish I had (an engagement story) …already started planning our Maui wedding in Septemeber 2011…venue is booked…some vendors are booked…but haven’t received the “offical proposal” yet…still need to pick up the ring…a deposit has been made…my boyfriend/FI was laid off but then rehired so the ring was put on hold…should now have it in the next week or two…we’ve live together…have been common law for almost three years. He’s not the most romantic so he will probably bend down on one knee and say babe “let’s do this”!"

Ring Bearer Bowl, Paloma’s Nest -- Matthew: "My fiance and I share the job of doing dishes together each night and a dish like this would be a great place to put our rings so they don’t get lost, or at least mine won’t get lost. Our wedding is a little unconventional and a pillow just won’t do."

Clay gardenia hair piece, Tracey Paul/Invite Me! Creative Announcements -- Jenny: "I am having a very simple but intimate garden wedding ceremony and wasn’t going to wear a veil. But to add some elegance and freshness, I was going to wear a white flower in my hair. I think this clay gardenia hair accessory will look so beautiful with my wedding gown and I can treasure it forever! (unlike if I were to use real flowers)."

Customized sparkler holder template, Twig & Thistle -- Sabrina: "oh my gosh this is perfect…..this is exactly what I was looking for to add to the pyro for all our guests. We’re getting married in may and would just appreciate this special touch."

Handwoven flower cone, Nutfield Weaver -- Kristin M.: "Hmmm we’re actually not allowed to throw petals at our site, so I’d fill this with either lots of peonies and roses or with a bunch of strawberries (my flower girl is very obsessed with strawberries at the moment!), that she could carry."

Snap and Tumble's 20 flat thank-you letterpressed cards in yellow and matching grey envelopes -- Tracey M: "These cards are absolutely beautiful! The detailing on the envelope is so different and will really make the thank you cards stand out! The cards are simple, but will really make wedding guests feel appreciated. I love the colours too!"

“Love” embroidered pillow, The Garter Maker -- Christina G.: "I know others have said it, but this would look lovely on our bed. And would be a reminder of the greatest day of our lives….every single night!"

Cut the Cake Designs’ wedding guest book box -- Sam: "I love the chrysanthemum print…so adorable! I would either keep the cards as is in their box and re-read the comments every so often to reminisce about the wedding; or I’d make a giant collage and frame it for display in our home. I love this giveaway!"

Purple jewel & white feather fascinator, One Little Dove -- Jessica: "what fascinates me is that i have been so relaxed through the whole process. i thought it would be a super stressful time but so far it hasn’t. i’ve got about 3 months left though so the stress might be coming soon! i am also fascinated by all the people that have shown support and helped out to make the big day a big success "

10" Eyelet Cake Stand in glossy white, Jeanette Zeis Ceramics -- Barbara: "i’m surprising my daughter with a cupcake buffet at her wedding and this would be perfect! she has damask table runners so i would personalise it with a shiny black or velvet ribbon."

Four purple and pearl hand-beaded leaves on a ribbon-wrapped headband, Quirky Beauty -- Deb Lewis: "Perfect way to add glam to any outfit"

Babbs' ivory silk pleated clutch with a removable flower brooch -- Corinne: "I adore this simply beautiful clutch. There are several things I would put inside its little pocket. First, a Tide-To-Go pen – for any emergencies throughout the day that might attack my dress, or my fiance – he is a magnet for messes/dirt. My cellphone – I can’t go anywhere without it. I won’t be blogging immediately after I’m married or posting a comment on twitter, but I have to have my cellphone close. I’m not a big make-up person but I can anticipate having my favourite shade of Mac lip gloss or my Burt’s Bees lip balm inside the clutch. Kleenix is a must – chances are there will be tears from many people on the day – parents, bridal party, family, myself or my fiance. On the odd chance that my breath isn’t up to par I will most likely have a pack of gum inside to freshen-up. Being a paramedic, I’m pretty sure I could create a teeny tiny first aid kit for emergencies during the day (band-aids, alcohol wipes, safety pins, etc.)."

VIP for a Day

January 26, 2010

At The Wedding Show, we had our first ever VIP tour with 10 contest winners and their guests. Catherine took the group through the empty Wedding Show on a personalized trend-oriented tour pointing out great ideas, fresh looks and answering questions from brides- and grooms-to-be. At the end of the tour we provided each person with a personalized bag of goodies and asked them all to pose in Booth — a photo booth which made its debut at The Wedding Show. Take a look at the tour below, our favourite Booth shots are coming later and few behind-the-scenes of the VIP bags in the making can be seen if you click to read the full post.
