Q & A With Toronto Photographer Storey Wilkins
What inspired you to start your business?
I started my boutique midtown-Toronto wedding photography business 18 years ago with an eye for telling great love stories. You could say I was called to it, as though this high risk, high energy career just chose me. I knew I had the dedication to the craft as well as the Toronto wedding industry that my clients deserved.
What do you love about weddings?
On a wedding day, I have the privilege of being able to tell a story through a series of natural, thoughtful and emotional photographs. These photographs will show a great deal about the spirit of my couple’s personalities, their love for each other, and the love among their family and friends. For me, it isn't about the grand sweeping portrait, the fashion edge or the over-romanticized scene. It is about a real love story where the couple commits to a lifetime together in front of their family and closest friends. What an honor for me to be able to capture that for them! I believe that a wedding is the birth of a new family, Day One for that family. The families that shaped and nurtured this couple are hugely important in the wedding-day story. So, I make every effort to document the families through both candid photographs and lovely group portraits. I think capturing the families interacting is one of my favorite parts of the day.
What sets you apart from everyone else?
Telling a natural, thoughtful, emotional story through photographs requires multiple skills (beyond excellent camera work and lighting technique). Firstly it requires a likeable and trustworthy personality so that clients feel comfortable inviting me into their world to record their wedding day. It requires an ability to skillfully capture a balance of three types of photographs: formal “asked for” portraiture, documentary events, and candid “found” moments. Failure to deliver an equal balance of these will inevitably result in disappointment of the clients and their families. Storytelling photography also requires heightened intuition to the nuances of individual personalities and group dynamics so that I tell their story, not mine. The photographs must capture the spirit of the family and must even be visible to strangers looking at the photographs (who say I feel like I know these people after watching your slideshow). Finally, it requires knowing when to politely and efficiently control and direct during group portraits and when to back off and become almost invisible during the party.
How would you describe your style?
A sense of style, a sense of timing and a whole lot of fun…these are the elements I bring to you.
Do you have any special offers we can share?
I still have some 2019 weekend dates available. Please contact me so that we can set up an appointment. While most of my GTA couples prefer coverages that are 8-12 hours in length, I LOVE the short and sweet coverages too, and I would be happy to customize a great wedding photography experience for you. I also love to head up north to photograph unique cottage weddings. Let’s chat!
