Q & A with Kim Ironmonger

What inspired you to start your business?

As a child I struggled with severe Dyslexia and acedemic studies were a challenge for me however creating and the arts came very easily. The arts became a first love for me. My parents had a fashion business that took the family to Europe often for buying trips. In and around 1985 my brother was getting married and his fiance could not find the perfect gown. I was in England at the time and found a few couture designers with unique designs. My future sister in law never ended up buying one of those gowns but it made me realize that there was a huge need for beautiful bridal gowns in Canada. From then, 1985, Valencienne was established as a business.

What do you love about weddings?

I love different parts of my job for different reasons. I love sitting with a bride and chatting about her dream wedding gown helping her navigate her way through her wants verses reality. I love designing a garment that is uniquely her own which compliments her wedding and her style. I love designing my store samples as its very inspiring to have the freedom to create anything I want with no restrictions. It fills my heart when we finish creating something so complicated that sometimes we question whether or not we know what we are doing but then as a team, we create magic. Each piece becomes this amazing couture work of art that nobody knows nor will ever understand what went into making it.

How would you describe your style?

It is very difficult for us to pinpoint a specific style for Valencienne. In the 80’s we were known for our over the top ball gowns and corseted bodices but it is important for us to evolve as time passes by. We don’t have a specific “look” and we try not to follow trends. We prefer to try and create trends rather than follow them. We have a certain quality that we aspire to and we ensure that any design we produce meets that high standard every time.

What sets you apart from everyone else?

What sets us apart from everyone else would be the Valencienne experience its self. The stories (I am known for my story telling), the beauty of the store, the selection of couture gowns available for you to try on and most importantly the team which encompasses over 120 years of experiences combined between the artisans who work for Valencienne. Each artisan specializes in their own area of expertise as opposed to one person doing it all. Having these special quality ensures that your bridal gown excels in design, fit, fabrics, finish and embellishments. You experience a series of fittings that allows you to be involved every step of the way.

Do you have any special offers we can share?

We are currently finishing our 2019 collection which will be available on our floor December 15th, 2018 just in time for those December proposals.
